What changed
For years, Salt City Drums on State Street was where the Wasatch Front went to get a kit tuned, reheaded, or repaired, and where drum teachers and music stores sent their students. With the shop closed, that referral network has nowhere to point.
What’s left is general music stores that will change a head but don’t specialize in drums, or shipping a kit out of state. Neither works well for a church kit that needs to sound right by Sunday or a drumline replacing marching heads before competition season.
Your options now
- A dedicated tuning and repair service. Utah Drums covers Utah County and Salt Lake County by appointment: tuning by genre, head replacement, cleaning and hardware restoration, session and live drum tech, and consultations, with published prices and a tuning spec sheet for every kit. Drop off, or we travel.
- A custom builder for shell and bearing-edge work. Salt Lake still has high-end custom drum builders. For re-cutting bearing edges or shell repair we refer to them directly rather than shipping your kit away.
- A general music store for a quick head swap. Fine in a pinch for a single head. It’s worth asking whether they tune to a target and whether they’ll check the bearing edges while the head is off.
If you were a referral partner
Teachers, studios, and stores that used to send repair work to Salt City: we’d like to be your new referral. Your students and customers get published prices and a spec sheet. Get in touch and we’ll set it up.
Questions
- Is Salt City Drums closed?
- The dedicated drum shop on State Street in Salt Lake City has closed. If you were sending repair work there, or being referred there by a teacher or music store, you'll need a new option for tuning, heads, and restoration.
- Where can I get drums repaired near Salt Lake City now?
- Utah Drums is a dedicated, by-appointment drum tuning and repair bench serving Utah County and Salt Lake County: drop-off, or travel for $30–$60. Bearing edge and shell work is referred to a local custom builder.
- Do general music stores do drum tuning?
- Some will change heads, but very few have a dedicated drum bench or tune to measured frequencies. For anything beyond a head swap, such as voicing, restoration, or session tech, a specialist is a better option.
